Vinyl Floor Maintenance & Care

Here are a few helpful tips that will keep your new vinyl floor looking new, and help it last for years to come.

Minimize Foot Traffic for the First 24 Hours. It can take up to a full day for the adhesive used on your vinyl floor to dry properly. Take specific care to avoid all seams during this drying period.

Sweep or Vacuum Regularly. Weekly sweeping or vacuuming of the floor will remove loose dirt that can scratch your floor. When using a vacuum, either turn off the beater bar or use a non-powered attachment. Beater bars can leave visible scratches.

Use Water. Lukewarm water, with no cleaning agents, is your best bet for regular cleaning of your floor.

Clean with a Soft Cloth or Mop and Vinyl-Specific Cleaner. Abrasive cleaners will scratch your floor, and most soaps and detergents can leave behind a dull film.

Polish to Restore Gloss. Most vinyl floors are not to be waxed or buffed. If your floor has started to lose its shiny finish, use a manufacturer recommended polish and follow the directions carefully.

Place Floor Protectors Under Furniture. Felt pads under chairs and other furniture can protect your vinyl floor from scratching or tearing.

Place Mats at Doorways. By placing mats inside and outside of all entrances, you'll trap harmful dirt and sand before they can scratch the surface of your vinyl floor.

Protect Your Floor from Sunlight. Intense sunlight can cause any product to fade, even your laminate floor. Curtains, blinds, shades, awnings, and UV-blocking glass treatments can help maintain the color of your floor.

Do Not Slide Appliances or Heavy Furniture. When moving appliances or heavy furniture across a vinyl floor, either pick it up with the help of another person or "walk it" on a piece of plywood to protect the floor from scratching.

Be Careful with Rolling Casters. Small casters and improperly working casters can cause dents, scratches, and tears in your vinyl floors. If your appliances are on wheels or casters, please make sure they are properly working before moving the appliance. You may also choose to further protect you floor from denting by placing flat floor protectors under the casters.

Always Use a Soft Cloth or Mop. Steel wool or other abrasive scouring pads may scratch the surface of your vinyl floor.

Wipe Up Spills Immediately. The longer a staining agent is on the floor, the greater the chance is will leave a permanent stain or discoloration.

Have Repairs Made by Professionals. Whether a seam comes apart, or you accidentally put a tear in your vinyl floor, call America's Floor Source as soon as possible. Repairs can be made, but the more water and dirt that gets into the opening, the harder a good repair is to make.
